Необходим ординарный (без излишеств) телефон низкой и средней ценовой категории, но с поддержкой Java. По состоянию на лето 2008 года - большинство выпускаемых телефонов обладают этой функцией. Если предположить, что Java поддерживается в 2011 году всеми производителями телефонов, но остаются масса подводных камней, которые могут вам уменьшить удобство использования Java-приложений.

• В первую очередь это умение оставаться на связи, когда приложение свернуто - многие производители считают, что после сворачивание приложение должно быть принудительно разъединено с интернетом. И не всегда способы изменить это поведение очевидны - решение нужно поискать. Вполне вероятно, что вызвав сервисный интерфейс и введя где надо false или единичку, можно выключить эти надоедливые разрывы.
• Вторым эшелоном камней идет неумение Java-приложения всплывать на передний план из свернутого состояния в тот момент когда приходит новое сообщение. Это означает что вы не увидите сообщения, пока не развернете приложение. Также такие приложения не могут проиграить и звуковой сигнал из свернутого состояния.
• Третим камнем преткновения является зачастую искуственно установленное ограничение на количество одновременно выполняющихся Java-приложений.

Или смартфон — «умный телефон» — внешне выглядит как обычный телефон, только стоит больше. Порой значительно. При этом не всегда оправдывая свою цену (с точки зрения "рядового" пользователя).
